Are you feeling work stressed?

I have found that stress is one of the most common areas that people come to see me for help. Some stress can be good for you but being over-stressed is not good and can affect your general health and wellbeing, resulting in difficulties in sleeping, relaxing, and causing irritability, anger and loss of control.

It makes good sense for staff and employers to consider the overall effect stress can have in the workplace, remembering that the level of stress individuals are able to deal with varies from one person to another.

Workplace stress can manifest itself in a variety of ways and recognising when you or someone else is under too much stress before it gets to an overwhelming level can be crucial to their health and wellbeing. It can impact on work performance and also affect their home and social life.

Our brains are very adept at dealing with the perception of threats and the heightened awareness we feel at that time can sometimes lead to us feeling over- stressed, resulting in negative reactions. The way the brain thinks is an evolutionary coping mechanism that each of us has, whereas this mechanism can be helpful when we really are threatened, it is unhelpful when it leaves us feeling over-stressed and unable to cope in our day-to-day lives.

This can lead to people struggling to cope with stress which may then manifest in other systems such as struggling with sleep patterns , becoming irritable, having anger issues or becoming insular and isolated from colleagues and friends. Being over-stressed can also mean a person being less able to control their eating, drinking or smoking habits. Clearly it is helpful to have a strategy to help manage workplace stress.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can work because it helps people to think differently about the stress they are feeling rather than trying to remove the source of the stress, which can sometimes be difficult if the source is the work environment. Once our perspective around stress changes it can enable us to manage our stress better and help us move towards a brighter future.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a non-invasive therapy that can aid in the reduction of stress, so that the client copes more effectively in work, at home and socially. Some clients have also found that it helps to improve their thinking ability, productivity and confidence.

We all have a responsibility for our own health and wellbeing and employers have an added interest in supporting the health and wellbeing of their workforce as an aid to productivity. Having access to a qualified Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist can help people to manage stress, whether caused by their working life or elsewhere.
